The Past
Pattaya's name was originated from the march of Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin the Great) and his followers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi just before the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese invaders in 1767.
When Phraya Tak's army arrived in the vicinity of what is Pattaya today, he encountered the troops of Nai Klom who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline, thereby surrendering without a fight. The place where the two armies confronted each other was later called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the spelling of the name has been simplified to Pattaya.
For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, sleepy Pattaya became Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort, which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors. A full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses replaced fishermens huts along the beach. Fishing vessels were adapted to become tourist boats and swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world frequented the quiet powdery golden beaches. Places of nighttime entertainment have also sprung up and are popular among international tourists.
The Present
Pattaya currently integrates the delights of a 1st class beach resort, city-like dining, shopping and night entertainment facilities with more than 300 assorted hotels, thousands of shops, restaurants and bars. In addition, there are an array of sports and recreational activities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, go-kart, gyms for working out, weight lifting and Thai-boxing gear. Pattaya Facts

Pattaya city is located on the eastern coast of the country at latitude 13 N and longitude 101 E in the area of Chon Buri province. It is 147 kilometers from Bangkok and lies parallel to Sukhumvit Road on its east and the coastline on its west. Pattaya occupies an area of 208.1 sq. km. that is divided into 53.44 sq. kilometers of land and 154.66 sq. kilometers of islands and sea. Its coastline is 15 kilometers long.
Pattaya has a plain on the coast with some high mountains to the south. The area on the east slopes down towards the sea on the west.

International Walking Street-pattaya
There is no doubt Pattaya, just a ten minute ride from Jomtien is famous world over for its night life with many attractions to suit all tastes and pockets.
Thai restaurants, nightclubs and massage
International and Thai restaurants, humble street stalls, nightclubs, discotheques, beer and go-go bars are plentiful. Thai body and foot massage is a relaxing option to the hectic lifestyle from around 250 baht an hour it's not to be missed. Shopping Malls like Mikes Mall and The Royal Plaza along the beach road offer an amazing array of products from ice cream to designer clothing and bags at very sensible prices, open until 11pm as well as live markets giving you plentiful opportunity to empty your credit card accounts. First second and third roads are filled with shops and carts selling their wares of every description and amazing prices - be prepared to barter, its custom, light hearted and fun except for the fixed price shops of course.
Had enough shopping then take a stroll along the floodlit beaches of Pattaya or Jomtien and cool those feet off in the warm sea or take a cool shower and get ready for the night ahead.
Thailand evening and night activities
The evenings activities start at around 8pm, the heats turned up around 10pm, restaurants and bars are open earlier and Pattaya and Jomtien go on until dawn. The center of activity in Pattaya is undoubtedly "Walking Street" just a ten minute ride from Jomtien by baht bus or taxi, everyone who is in the area will visit the famous Walking Street for a trip or two - some hardly ever leave! Walking Street is a neon extravaganza with bars and restaurants, the seafood restaurants perched on stilts out into the bay. After 6.30pm Walking Street is pedestrianised but as the night goes on its very busy.
Pattaya entertainment
Pattaya provides more live entertainment than you could ever visit in a single trip, outside Walking Street you will find Hollywood disco on South Pattaya Road, lady boy shows (a must) at Tiffany's and Alcazar, entertaining and unbelievably brilliant. Pattayaland is a place to go for the gays with many western eateries in the area just a few hundred meters from Walking Street. The mall at the southern end of beach road includes, curiously, a Ripley's Believe it or Not, an entertainment center with roller-coaster simulator, cinema all of which are open till late.
Jomtien has many bars, restaurants and go go bars even English fish and chips so there is no need to visit Pattaya center as many facilities are available locally, however, a visit to Jomtien/Pattaya without a trip to walking street would be a hugely missed experience.

The International Pattaya Golf Club
The International Pattaya Golf Club was formed in 2000 to organise and coordinate competition golf in and around Pattaya, on Thailand's Eastern Seaboard. It is a non-profit organisation and "member club" offering membership to all players regardless of handicap, race or gender. IPGC offers regularly weekly scheduled competitions and "major" tournaments from time to time throughout the year.
Competitions are organised by the three member venues six days a week. IPGC negotiates with local clubs, on behalf of its member societies, to achieve the best discount rates for competition green fees and offers advice when necessary. All I.P.G.C. competitions are played in accordance with the Rules of Golf as jointly administered by the Royal and Ancient Golf Society (R&A) and by the United States Golf Association (U.S.G.A.), and supplemented by the Local Rules of the course on the day and by those Local Rules of the I.P.G.C. itself. I.P.G.C. players compete using their CONGU handicaps administered by the I.P.G.C whenever available with exceptions being made for those players with well-seasoned and properly maintained outside handicaps. These exceptions shall be determined by the golf organizer of the day's competition.
The I.P.G.C. competitions are run with the full intention that the golf be friendly and that the comradeship on the course shall be carried to the member venues afterwards.

Pattaya Travel Guide – Top 10 Recommendations
With its large expatriate community and diverse attractions, Pattaya has gained a reputation as one of Thailand's leading international communities. Its other reputation as Bangkok's playground and the capital of the sex industry, it attracts a very specific sort of tourist. No matter what your reasons for visiting, you'll find an exhausting list of attractions, theme parks and entertainment to keep you busy while you're here. Million Years Stone Park and Pattaya Crocodile Farm
The Million Years Stone Park and Crocodile Farm is a great place to take in some of the indigenous plant and animal life of Thailand. More than 1,000 crocodiles are kept and bred on the grounds and there are some elephants and rare albino bears. Elephant shows are held every day, as is the crocodile roundup. The grounds also have some beautiful landscaping, most outstanding of which is the bonsai garden. The park can be reached via a 15-minute drive from Pattaya city centre.
Ripley’s Believe It or Not
This one-of-a-kind museum is located on the third floor of the Royal Garden Plaza building in Pattaya. The facility contains over 300 unusual exhibits exploring the whole gamut of weird and unexplained phenomena. Some of the more popular attractions include the Infinity Maze, an immersive, walk-through sound and light show that tests the limits of perception; and the Haunted Adventure, a resurrection of an old real-life mystery set at the Grimsby and Streaper Casket Company and brought to life with live actors, special effects and animatronics. Despite its emphasis on the odd, Ripley's is Pattaya's most outstanding museum and a definite must-see.
Sriracha Tiger Zoo
North of the city of Pattaya, the Sriracha Tiger Zoo can be found off Route 3241 via a 30-minute drive from the city centre. The subjects of this facility can be found in a variety of circumstances including in their natural surroundings as well as more interactive settings. Visitors will have the opportunity to bottle-feed young cubs as well as have their picture taken with them. The zoo is home to several other species including crocodiles, elephants and scorpions. Some of the more outlandish shows include elephants playing basketball and a woman wrestling a crocodile.
Mini Siam
One of Pattaya's most well-known sites for tourists is Mini Siam, a 1:25 scale replication of some of Thailand's most popular sites from across the country. There are 80 buildings in the park representing periods throughout Thailand's history. Don Muang Airport is on-site, as is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and the Temple of Phimai in Nakorn Ratchisima. The best time to visit is after dark, when the exhibits are illuminated and take on a new life.
Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
Anyone who wishes to visit the Nong Nooch Tropical Garden can catch a shuttle bus that departs from in front of the Nipa Lodge Hotel in downtown Pattaya. This park covers more than 600 acres and hosts a broad spectrum of exhibits dedicated to Thai culture and history. The grounds include a cactus garden, an orchid nursery and a lake with canoes that can be hired. The arts and culture centre hosts daily exhibitions of Thai dance, Muay Thai (Thai boxing) and elephant shows. There's also a zoo on-site and accommodation for overnight stays.
Wat Yansangwararam
Pattaya is not as well known for its temples and ancient architecture as Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Even so, the Yansangwararam is a temple worth checking out while in the area. It's located a few miles south of Pattaya and was built in 1988 to commemorate the 42nd year of King Bhumibol's reign. On-site is a lake with Chinese pavilions and a building that houses several art exhibits and antiques of Chinese origin. The temple itself sits at the apex of a flight of 299 stairs hemmed in by snakes.
Pattaya Elephant Village
Visitors who want to get an up close look at the iconic Thai elephant can do so at the Pattaya Elephant Village. These animals have served the country in a variety of roles over the centuries, spanning war times and more recently, teak harvesting. The elephants in the village are protected and perform daily educational and entertaining feats showcasing their forestry and football skills. Visitors can also ride the elephants into the forest and listen to English language explanations of this beast's history in Thailand.
Pattaya Beach
While it may be saturated with visitors and a little polluted, Pattaya's beachfront property continues to be its greatest draw. Visitors come to enjoy the beach in any number of ways, whether it's a walk on the tree-lined promenade; a relaxed seafood dish eaten on an outdoor veranda or simply a laid-back afternoon spent on a deckchair. Charter boats head out to some of the nearby islands where further exploration and snorkelling is available. There's not too much actual swimming in the water, though it's bustling with jet-skis, banana boats and motor boats.

The constant flux of tourists through Pattaya has given way to a variety of amusement parks. Pattaya Water Park is a huge facility with water slides, Jacuzzis, whirlpools and a children's wading pool. Staggering towers at the Pattaya Park Resort and Amusement Park are capped by revolving restaurants with impressive views of the city and sea. The Funny Land Amusement Park has all sorts of carnival and theme-park style rides including a roller coaster and a pendulum Viking ship. Asia's largest aquarium is also located in Pattaya—Underwater World, with an impressive walking tunnel allowing visitors to walk in among the aquatic life.
Nightlife and gay activities
Anyone visiting Pattaya will at some point be confronted with the city's notoriety as a part of the sex industry. While it's true that sex tourism is in full force in the go-go bars along Walking street, it's easy to find more family-oriented locations across town where you can get a bite to eat or relax in the evening. There are a couple of Irish pubs, an English pub and a blues bar where tourists can enjoy a relaxed evening without the risqué atmosphere. On the whole, the nightlife in Pattaya spans all interests and there's something for everyone to enjoy. Pattaya is also a popular gay destination.
